The Naya Stool, named after the barn in the mountains of Okayama Prefecture where it was made, was created by Komatsu Isao in 1974. It was used as a work chair when Komatsu was making wooden carved Bitchu Kagura masks. After retiring from his job as an elementary school teacher, he took advantage of his natural dexterity and continued to make difficult wooden carved masks called Bitchu Kagura masks for 26 years. The Bitchu Kagura masks made by Komatsu originated from a Shinto ritual to pray for bountiful harvests, and in this region they have traditionally been placed at the entrance of homes to pray for the safety of the household and prosperity of the family. The Naya Stool had been forgotten and placed on the second floor of a barn for over 20 years, but was discovered in 2020 among the lumber used to make Kagura masks.
