Collection: Børge Mogensen
Børge Mogensen (13 April 1914 – 5 October 1972) was a Danish furniture designer. Along with Arne Jacobsen and Hans J. Wegner, he is one of the leading figures in modern Danish furniture design.
Born in Aalborg, Denmark in 1914. He qualified as a furniture master in 1934 and began his career as a furniture craftsman. He studied furniture design at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts' Furniture Department from 1936 to 1938, and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts' Furniture Department from 1938 to 1941. He studied under Kaare Klint and Mogens Koch, founders of modern Danish furniture design. He taught at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. From 1942, he worked as a chief in the furniture department of the Danish Cooperative Union (now FDB Möbler). He released the "Sportsback Sofa".
Believing that "furniture makes people happy," Børge Mogensen had a dream of making it possible for ordinary young people to buy high-quality furniture, and in order to make this dream come true, he became the first president of FDB Møbler.
The relationship between Børge Mogensen and FDB Møbler was very good, and he went on to change the environment that had previously made mass production impossible and lay the foundations for FDB Møbler.
This J52 was originally designed as the J6, but later the seat and other details were changed, and the product number was changed. However, it appeared in FDB Möbler's very first advertisement, and has since been used in posters and other media, becoming a popular signature product.
Following the teachings of Koak Klint, J52 was inspired by the British Windsor chair, which was simple, beautiful and easy to make. In 1944, he collaborated with his friend Hans J. Wegner to create a spoke-back chair redesigned to suit the Danish social climate of the time. He also released the J-39, an adaptation of a Shaker-style chair.
When the J6 was replaced by the J52, a new rocking type, the J52G, was developed, which, together with the standard J52B, led the era as one of FDB Möbler's representative chairs. Because this design was the face of FDB Möbler, it was retained until the end and was one of the first to be reproduced.
